Toshiba Televisions Toshiba stopped making plasma TVs in 2006. While the market has often considered LCD and DLP to be the technologies of the future, Toshiba was perhaps the first major player to remove plasma televisions from its line-up.While it focuses on LCD for now, Toshiba has invested in a new technology, SED (surface-conduction electron-emitter display), which it is developing alongside Canon. The promise of SED is that it offers flat screen TVs of similar dimensions to LCD and plasma, yet excels in picture performace (and the angle from which the screen can be properly viewed), bringing flat screen performance more in-line with CRT televisions. While several key dates and targets have slid by, leaving spectators to suggest that SED isn’t going to make an appearance in the marketplace, Toshiba have recently announced that SED TVs will be released in 2008. Meantime, taking a firm stance on the middle ground, Toshiba makes LCD TVs from 19” to 52”. The flagship model, the 52” full HD Regza sells for around £2100.
