Breitling Watches Leon Breitling opened a workshop at St Imier, located in the Jura mountains, in 1884. He was to specialise in making chronographs and counters for scientific purposes, and in doing so, established the foundations for Breitling as a famous Swiss watchmaker.
In 1914 Leon died, and Breitling was taken over by his son, Gaston Breitling. In 1915 Gaston invented the first chronograph wristwatch. Chronographs had been available on pocket watches before, but the wristwatch made the functions more accessible to the early aeroplane pilots. This was the start of Breitling’s long running association with the aeronautic industry.
In 1932 control passed to Gaston’s son, Willy Breitling.
In 1979 Ernest Schneider, skilled as a pilot, a watchmaker, and in microelectronics, takes over control of Breitling from Willy.
Current Breitling timepieces do not contain movements made in house, but are instead bought from renowned Swiss manufacturers Valjoux and ETA, both companies being part of the Swatch Group. However, these movements are subject to various modifications by Breitling before finding their way into any of the watches they produce.
Recent models include the Avenger Seawolf Chrono, Chrono-Matic 49, and the Cockpit.
