1. What is the LxDb?
The LxDb is an ongoing project to locate and record companies that provide the UK with luxury goods or services. Unlike a directory, LxDb is concerned in recording both the brand and the product, thus providing the user with a highly refined set of results.

2. What is a luxury?
There are many definitions. To us, a luxury is something you don’t need, but you really, really want. Even if you want it so badly you’ve convinced yourself you need it. In fact, they’re the best kind.

3. Where does the information come from?
The information is drawn from numerous sources, including recommendations and advice, the companies themselves and some good old-fashioned research. Anyone can recommend a company, while companies that are already included can request a free upgrade.

4. Is inclusion in LxDb free?
All listings on the site are free, regardless of how many categories a company appears in. Upgrading a current listing is also free. This is key to our project’s goal; building a comprehensive database of companies that serve the UK with the finer things in life.

5. What type of companies are eligible for inclusion?
There are three criteria: the company must have a website, it must be able to supply UK residents (either by location or mail), and it must deal with luxuries.

6. What if the category I need isn’t listed?
If the category you’d like to see your company in isn’t listed, chances are it soon will be. We have thousands of new categories underway, so even if they haven’t gone live yet, there is a very good chance the category you need will soon be on-line. All companies will be considered for inclusion on the basis of whether they provide luxury goods.

7. My company is listed, what are my free upgrade options?
If your company is already listed, you can use our upgrade form to request the following:

a) Change how your company name is displayed, eg "The Toy Store" or "Toy Store, The"
b) Display your email address. We do not display this as default due to the fact email addresses listed on websites are prone to spam. At your request it will appear under your telephone number.
c) Add a footnote to your listing of up to 255 characters. This note will appear on all entry categories that your company is listed in.

While requesting an upgrade, remember to check the categories that your company is listed in and advise of any changes you require.

8. Why do some companies appear twice in the index?
Some companies operate distinctly different businesses from the same address. An example of this is a car dealer that has more than one franchise. Each marque will typically have its own website, and usually different telephone numbers. In order for the database to provide the most relevant results for any given query these entries must be processed as separate.

9. Why don’t some items appear in the search results?
In some cases you may find that a newly added company or entry category is not reflected in the search findings. New entries typically make it into the search findings within 24 hours, and this delay is natural.

10. Can I recommend a site as an external reference?
Each entry category carries a maximum of five external references, which are links to sites that we feel will be of interest to a potential buyer. Typically at least one of these references will be the manufacturer’s site. If you would like to recommend an external reference just send us a short message.

11. How are the usage statistics calculated?
The most popular entry pages and searches shown on the home page are drawn in real time from the database usage statistics. To avoid these figures being falsely inflated (and therefore irrelevant), the results are based on behavourial patterns rather than just raw hits.
